Wirral Council has been urged to do more to bring empty and derelict shops and business units back into use, including converting appropriate units into homes.
Councillor Paul Hayes has made the call after it has been revealed that most of a grant given by the Government in 2010 for empty units, has not been used.
Just £11,000 of the £52,000 grant has been used and £41,000 remains untouched, seven years later.
Councillor Hayes said: “There are many small, former retail areas around the Borough where this money could be used – such as the empty shops on Mount Road in Wallasey.
“The Council has some money available, lying untouched for seven years. We know shopping habits are changing and more is taking place online but these former units cannot be left derelict, becoming an eye sore in communities.
“The recent budget announced a further £675 million to help our high streets for re-developing empty shops as homes and offices and restore and re-use old and historic properties.”
“The money is there – we need the Town Hall to act.”
