There are renewed calls to scrap plans for cycle lanes through Liscard, following a proposed ban on bikes and scooters in the area.
Wirral Council is proposing the introduction of a Public Space Protection Order covering Liscard Town Centre to deter anti-social behaviour from taking place.
The Protection Order, if implemented, would ban pedal cycles, scooters or E-bikes, except for those with mobility issues or to provide goods and services to properties.
In the Council’s recent consultation on cycle lane proposals, 68% of people who took part said they were opposed to this route, with residents highlighting safety on Liscard Way for pedestrians.
Councillor Ian Lewis, (Conservative, Wallasey Ward) said: “While one part of the Council is dogmatically working to encourage more cycling in Liscard Town Centre, another part of the Council is now actively trying to ban it.
“In January, a majority of residents opposed the route through the middle of Liscard, yet the Council’s Environment Committee was advised to carry on regardless.
“Now, with yet more hard evidence of the problems cyclists and scooters are causing in Liscard, the Council is seeking to ban them.
“Is the Town Hall in favour of cycling in Liscard or against? Or is it both, depending on which department you speak to?
“To put a stop to this nonsense, the plans for the cycle lane through Liscard need to be dropped once and for all before any more money is wasted and public safety compromised.”
In the period 1 March 2024 to 1 March 2025, there were 288 reported incidents to Police in the area.
Reports have included individuals covering their faces to hide their identities and reckless use of pedal cycles, E-bikes and scooters on the pavements.
This behaviour has been reported as intimidating and a nuisance to residents, businesses and visitors to the area.
The consultation on the Liscard Public Spaces Protection Order runs until 25 August and can be completed online: Liscard Public Spaces Protection Order | Have your say Wirral or in person at The Cherry Tree Centre, Liscard on Thursday 24 July 2025 (12pm – 2pm) and Wednesday 6 August (12pm – 2pm).
