Following our campaign in November, along with opposition from small businesses, Labour had a last-minute rethink on parking charges at a meeting on 10 March. They agreed to ‘pause’ the plan, ahead of a full review.
Reform Councillors didn’t turn up to that meeting.
Then, on 20 July, at a meeting to agree the details of the review, Conservatives called for the 25 sites to be exempt from new charges.
While Reform did attend this meeting, they argued AGAINST our proposal, instead suggesting the decision should be delayed until 2027.
Conservatives believe this would have prolonged the uncertainty for local shops and businesses. Many are already facing higher business rates, employment taxes and energy bills. The last thing they need is the prospect of losing customers due to parking charges.
That's why we proposed the clause, which was seconded by Labour Councillor Angie Davies (Leasowe & Moreton East). This ensured that all 25 sites in Wirral, which were listed for charges, will remain free, thanks to the following:
“(3) Instruct the interim Director of Operations to exclude the 25 currently free to park areas from the review in relation to any introduction of car parking charges, which is referred to in (2) above (22 car parks and 3 promenades) ending the ongoing uncertainty for our local businesses. Many of the 25 areas have businesses that are already struggling with the effects of the rise in the cost of living. In addition, potential new businesses are unable to plan or invest in these areas due to the current uncertainty regarding parking charges. Businesses and residents alike need some breathing space now; some help with the cost of living.
We hope this article helps to clear up any confusion among members of Reform Wirral on this important issue.

To be fair, it's not just the Conservatives who have been clear about opposing parking charges.
Wirral's Lib Dems have.
So has Rupert Lowe and Restore Britain. This is what the manager of the Wirral Branch of Restore Britain said:
