New bid for banking hub in Wallasey

There are renewed calls for a banking hub in Wallasey, following news of the closure of two more bank branches in the town.

In October 2023, Councillors Ian Lewis and Lesley Rennie submitted a bid for a banking hub in Wallasey Village, with wide support from the local community (1)

However, that proposal was rejected by Link due to the access to cash from Wallasey Village Post Office and banks and building societies in Liscard.

Since then, Wallasey Village Post Office closed and both Halifax and Natwest have announced the closure of their branches in Liscard.

Councillor Ian Lewis said: “We have been in touch with Cash Access UK, the body that oversees banking hubs, and they have agreed to look again at the situation in Wallasey.

“This was before the closure of Halifax and Natwest was announced and so we’re hopeful this will persuade the banks that a hub in Wallasey is needed more than ever.

Councillor Lesley Rennie added: “In spite of strong community support, the Post Office closed their branch in Wallasey Village. The lack of access to cash and banking services is a bigger problem now than it was when we first asked for a banking hub.

“We’re asking residents and businesses to back the campaign and request a ‘review’ of banking services in Wallasey.”
