Three of Wirral's 14 libraries could be closing under Town Hall proposals published this week, ahead of a legally-required consultation starting on Tuesday 6 May.
In the Wallasey constituency, none of the libraries are at risk, although some could be relocated;
- Leasowe (21 books borrowed each month)- moving from the Millennium Centre to the more popular Community Centre
- Moreton (1,573 books borrowed each month) - no change, but will be improved as part of the wider redevelopment at Pasture Road
- Upton (1,224 books borrowed each month)- no change
- Seacombe (66 books borrowed each month)- moved to the Family Hub on St Paul's Road
- Wallasey Central (6,502 books borrowed each month) - potentially moving to the Floral Pavilion
The proposals will see £3.705m spent on Wirral's libraries (down from £3.823m last year).
Following requests from Conservative Councillors, it's been confirmed that £81,800 will be spent on new books over the next year, as well as £32,700 for e-book, e-audio and e-press.
Next year, the new book fund will increase to £131,800, alongside the existing £32,700 for digital services.
Councillor Vida Wilson (Moreton West & Saughall Massie) said: "Moreton Library is a vital community hub, and even more so since the Town Hall closed the One Stop Shop.
"Around 400 books are borrowed every week from Moreton Library - as well as increasing numbers of eBooks, audiobooks and ePress.
"The Town Hall has previously ensured that Moreton Library is included in the wider development of Pasture Road. So, in a sense, they had no choice but to ensure it stays open and available to the Moreton community.
"Councillors Colin Baldwin, Gary Bennett and I would never support closure of this library."
Upton Library also remains open in the current plans, while Leasowe Library moves from the Millennium Centre to the more popular Leasowe Community Centre.
