Massive response to Fender Lane cycle route survey

The latest Council consultation has received more than 1,000 responses from residents.

After years of criticism, the Town Hall finally agreed to ask residents whether the cycle routes on Fender Lane, between Tesco and Reeds Lane, Moreton, should be removed.

Enquiries by the Leader of Wirral’s Conservative Councillors, Cllr. Jeff Green, have revealed that 1,049 people responded to the online survey, which closed on 9 December.

Cllr. Green said: “Unlike some recent consultations, the survey on the Fender Lane route did give people the opportunity to say whether they wanted it to stay, or go.

“However, surely this should have been carried out before the cycle route was installed.

“Many residents are understandably cynical that council consultations are a sham and that some councillors carry on regardless.

“My challenge to the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee is to abide by the results of the consultation and to give that commitment now.

“Taxpayers cannot understand how councillors can spend these huge sums on projects that nobody has asked for, while many essential public services are short of cash.”

Previously, the Council has lost valuable data on the use of the cycle route. The results of the consultation were due to be considered at the January meeting of the committee, along with the controversial Core Active Travel Network affecting most of Wallasey, but this has now been delayed.

Councillor Gary Bennett (Conservative, Moreton West & Saughall Massie) added: “This cycle route, perhaps more than any other, has become a symbol of how out of touch this Council is.

“Every resident who has contacted myself and colleagues Colin Baldwin and Vida Wilson, has said the same thing – it’s a white elephant and a waste of their taxes.

“I would like to thank every resident who responded to our last newsletter on this – I urge the Town Hall to listen to what Moreton residents are saying and scrap this cycle route.”
