Have your say on Leasowe Road junction plans

Councillor Lesley Rennie

Road safety is finally set to be improved at a known crash hot spot in Wallasey, following a ten-year campaign by residents and councillors, as the latest vehicle data from the Government says 15,000 vehicles a day use it.

In 2023, £150,000 was allocated to improve the junction of Leasowe Road, Cross Lane and Greenleas Road, following regular reports of crashes, collisions and near misses.

The proposal published this week will see changes to the signal timings to remove the need for vehicles turning right from Leasowe Road to give way to oncoming traffic.

New signal-controlled pedestrian crossings will be installed, along with better street lighting and new pavements and road surfacing.

As the junction also forms part of the long-established ‘Route 56’ of the National Cycle Network, early release signals for cyclists travelling from Cross Lane and Greenleas Road have also been included.

Councillor Lesley Rennie said: “This junction has a very poor road safety record, mainly due to traffic signals that are no longer fit for purpose.

“Leasowe Road is a dual carriageway and we know from the complaints and crashes in recent years how turning right at any of the four junctions can be risky.

“I am grateful to the residents who have worked with us over recent years and also the Council’s Highways Team for using the available evidence to justify this work.”

Councillor Ian Lewis added: “With 15,000 vehicles a day using this junction, the need for improvements to improve both safety and traffic flow has never been greater. The proposal is out for consultation until 20 March and I’d urge any residents with views or comments to take part.”

Any comments on the proposals may be submitted online by Friday 20th March 2026 at www.wirral.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-travel/roads-and-pavements (Click on “Make comments about a new traffic scheme” quoting the scheme reference number DC-TfG-2526-13).

Alternatively, comments can be sent in writing to Paul Traynor, Assistant Director, Neighbourhood Services, PO Box 290, Brighton Street, Wallasey, CH27 9FQ quoting the scheme reference number by Friday 20th March 2026.
