Giving every child the best start in life

Children

Levelling up the country also means ensuring that babies and children are given the best possible start in life and are helped in reaching their full potential, regardless of their background.

Health experts agree that the first 1,001 days are the most critical for health, well-being and opportunity in every child’s life, that’s why we are pleased to inform you that the government has announced the publication of an ambitious programme which details the help and support every family can expect from Wirral Council in the coming months, including:

  • the quicker, safer and easier access to all child’s development and health information by digitising the ‘red book’
  • a publication from the Council detailing all the help you can expect, including health visits, help with quitting smoking, localised or specialised services and intensive parent support
  • creating a welcoming hub for all families to access Start to Life services such as childcare, early education, training and job advice
  • ensuring that the needs of families are being met by continually improving Start for Life services and provisions by holding proportionate inspections
  • encouraging all local areas to nominate a leader to ensure the delivery of the programme is overseen at a national level

“Most babies are born healthy and enjoy a safe and nurturing childhood.  However, some do not. Therefore, I am committed to removing barriers so all children are supported and nurtured so they are ready for life,” said Health Minister Jo Churchill MP.

The new support will work alongside the existing Start4Life programme provided by the NHS and the Healthy Start Vouchers.

If you are pregnant or have a child under 4, and are on income related benefits, you may be entitled to Healthy Start vouchers. The weekly vouchers, worth £4.25, can be put towards buying fruit, vegetables and milk.
