There are fresh calls for action at a derelict site in the heart of Wallasey Village, following further complaints of fly tipping and neglect.

The site on Leasowe Road was previously vacant shops and flats but has been lying empty since the buildings were demolished and the area cleared.

In 2017 and 2018 planning consent was granted by Wirral Council to redevelop the site with a mix of new shop units and flats above.

Since then, and in the absence of any work on site, the area has been blighted with rubbish, litter and undergrowth.

Councillor Ian Lewis (Conservative, Wallasey Ward) said: “We hear a lot about council hopes for Birkenhead but very often it is smaller sites such as this one which cause the most frustration to local communities.

“The shops in Wallasey Village, along with the volunteers at Wallasey Village in Bloom, work hard to maintain the local area but this site is a blot on the neighbourhood and gives a poor impression to residents and visitors alike.”

Following searches with the Land Registry, Councillor Lewis has written to the current owners of the site, two companies based in Middlesex and Hertfordshire, pushing for action to bring the site back into use.

“While I await their response, I have also contacted the Council’s Regeneration Director asking for his assistance. It is not acceptable that sites such as this, with the potential for new residential property to be lying dormant for so long, when there almost 6,000 people on the housing waiting list.”
