Consultation starts on future of Fender Lane cycle route

Fender Lane cycle route

The Council’s long-delayed review of the Fender Lane cycle route between Moreton and Bidston has started today. Running until 2nd December, residents will be asked to say whether they want no changes to the route, some changes or scrapping it altogether.

Councillor Gary Bennett (Conservative, Moreton West & Saughall Massie) said: “We’ve seen several consultations from the Town Hall lately. Some bad, some not so bad but what matters is if the Council listens.

“At least this consultation asks residents if they want this scheme removed.

“Having finally started this consultation, councillors must abide by the result of it. If the majority of residents want it scrapped, it must be scrapped.

“This cycle route has given the whole programme a bad name. Speaking to residents each week, the response varies from mocking laughter to anger at the waste of taxpayers’ money and frustration at the pointless traffic delays it causes.

“The route has been poorly designed including with bus stops that have been slammed by the RNIB, and even cyclists tell us they don’t like using it.”

“At the same time, the Council’s review has been delayed and delayed, and vital data lost.

“The question for residents to ask themselves is ‘has the Fender Lane cycle route been a success?’. If residents think it has not, then they have six weeks to tell the Council.”

The report into the Fender Lane cycle route is likely to be considered by the Council’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee on 27 January.
