Conservatives renew push for pensioner fuel support

As temperatures plummet, Conservative Councillors have again urged anyone affected by Labour's scrapping of Winter Fuel Payments to apply for pension credit.

A plan by Wirral's Conservative Councillors, including calling on the Chancellor to change course, was passed by a majority of councillors, although Labour Councillors sadly opposed our call.

Labour's first budget saw the Chancellor scrap the payments to millions of pensioners, along with the decision not to renew the Cost of Living Payments. Almost 60,000 pensioners in Wirral have lost out.

Among those most affected are pensioners with incomes of around £11,400. Across the country, there are around 800,000 pensioners on the lowest incomes who are not claiming - such as single pensioners with a weekly income of £235 or less or, if a couple, £330 a week.

Anyone who is affected and could be eligible for Pension Credit (worth up to £3,900 a year) they should contact the Department for Work and Pensions via this link or by phone 0800 99 1234.
