Wirral’s Conservative Councillors are urging Wirral Council to extend free parking in December to all parts of the Borough in December, following news that the Leader of the Council is making it free to park in Birkenhead Town Centre.
The Conservative Plan for Parking would see the first 15 minutes made free, and free parking after 3pm during December to support 'Small Business Saturday' and local shopping.
Councillor Jeff Green, Leader of the Conservative Group, has submitted a plan to the Council which will be voted on at a meeting on 1st December.
The plan, designed to support struggling retail and tourist areas across the Borough would also see the rollout of more charges paused as well as making parking free after 3pm in existing ‘pay and display’ car parks.
Cllr Green says supporting local communities and businesses should be a priority across all parties:
“Shops and small businesses across Wirral are facing some of the most challenging trading conditions in recent years.
“At a time when many are doing everything they can to retain staff, keep doors open and continue serving their communities, it is vital that the Council does nothing that unintentionally makes that struggle harder.
“12 months ago, the Town Hall ignored the views of businesses and local residents and voted to spend £1m on the introduction of new parking charges at 25 more locations.
“It seems the Leader of the Council agrees that parking charges do harm businesses, hence her decision to waive them in Birkenhead. However, all parts of the Borough should be treated equally and fairly.
