Since the start of the pandemic, grants from the Government have been used by Wirral Council to support 59,788 residents in vulnerable households.
Support includes food hampers, meals, bespoke food shopping, supermarket vouchers, fuel vouchers, essential supplies, white goods, essential furniture, warm clothing, emergency heating, emergency boiler repairs/replacements and help with utility debt.
Now, to ensure that no-one is left behind as the economy recovers, a further £1.1 million has been sent to the Council for use between now and September.
The Council's Chief Executive has agreed for the money to be used for:
- Supplement the Holiday Activities Fund (HAF): £200,000
- Food & resilience for families in need of additional support: £300,000
- COVID Local Support Summer Fund – small grants programme: £300,000
- Welcome Back to School Food Support Packs: £123,750
- Financial support with energy (fuel) and water bills debt: £125,000
- Crisis support with emergency call-outs and boiler replacements: £20,000
- Crisis support with white goods: £17,000

Councillor Lesley Rennie (Conservative, Wallasey Ward) said: "While the wider economy is recovering from the pandemic, there are families who will be struggling to make ends meet - either because of ill health, loss of income or even bereavement.
"This extra cash is designed to help the most vulnerable in our community at this time and we must make sure it does."
If you are involved in a local community group, then COVID Local Support Summer Fund in particular could be for the people you help.
This small grants programme will enable community-based food and welfare support providers to ensure food and essential supplies are available to those most in need over the summer months. The Fund will be launched on Monday 12 July 2021. Bids will be invited for a maximum of £15,000 per project. Groups will be permitted to add administration costs of no more than £500 which will form part of the administration costs set aside for the whole Grant (in line with the Grant conditions).
